What is Accessible Ocean Tech (AOT)?

Accessible Ocean Technology (AOT) encompasses cost-effective tools and solutions aimed at increasing ocean observations. AOT lowers the barriers to entry for a wider range of individuals.

It's more than just technology— AOT takes into consideration the whole life cycle of ocean tech, such as the cost of the tool, import fees, logistics, deployment, operation, data storage and processing, and maintenance.

It’s also a movement to empower coastal communities, researchers, and innovators to access, observe, and protect the ocean.

Whether you're building an ocean sensor, interested in using more equitable technology, or leading a community-based data initiative, you're part of the AOT wave.

It’s about community.

AOT isn’t just about the tools—it’s about broadening the community of ocean stakeholders and unlocking critical benefits for society, both in economic growth and sustainability.

Why AOT matters...

In a rapidly changing world, the need for ocean data has never been more critical. Making ocean tech more accessible exponentially increases the availability of data, driving informed decision-making (from weather forecasting to fisheries management).

Access to these insights is largely limited by technology and its associated costs. There is now a global push to develop accessible, cost-efficient technical solutions. However, these efforts often occur as uncoordinated parallels.

The online AOT Community connects these global efforts to facilitate the development and implementation of these much-needed technologies.
